Selling or buying a home often spotlights special exterior and interior features that add visual appeal. Whether you're drawn to old-world traditional style or elegant contemporary glamour, our real estate agents can help you find the perfect home that appeals to your personal design style.

One of the most important interior features in South Bend homes for sale is the flooring.Beautiful rugs can immediately add ambiance and style that quickly turns your home into a design showplace! W hen choosing rugs for your home, think about the look you're trying to achieve, the size of your room, and your lifestyle.

Showcase Your Style
Your rugs should showcase your interior style, so consider your furnishings, window treatments, artwork, and accessories before you begin. If your home is filled with traditional furnishings and antiques, look for rugs that reflect the same traditional ambiance. Traditional rugs usually have borders, repeating patterns, and fringed edges. If your style is contemporary or modern, consider rugs with more eclectic appeal. Contemporary rugs usually have free-form patterns with less repetition and bolder, brighter colors. Whatever your style, your rugs should provide a good backdrop and complement other furnishings and accessories in your room.

Choose the Right Size
The size of your rug can make or break your room's visual appeal. Measure, measure, measure, and don't guess when it comes to size! Your rug should be large enough to visually anchor the room and fit comfortably within the placement of your furnishings. If your rug anchors a seating arrangement or dining table, make sure the rug's edges are placed under the furnishings. A rug placed without anchored edges under furniture will always feel too small for the space. Typically, ready-made area rugs are available in the following sizes: 3'x5'; 4'x6'; 5'x7'; 8'x10'; and 9'x12'. If you need a special size or larger rug, consider a custom-made rug.

Select a Durable Material
When you're selecting a rug, it's important to consider your lifestyle and daily activities. With an active lifestyle or children and pets in the home, you will need a more durable material that can withstand foot traffic and stains. Take a look at some options:

  • Wool – A natural fiber that's durable, soft underfoot, and easy to clean. With regular cleaning and maintenance, wool rugs can easily last 50 years or more.
  • Cotton – A soft, natural fiber with visual appeal, but less durable than wool. Cotton and cotton-blend rugs require more maintenance, so they are best for areas with low traffic.
  • Nylon/Acrylic – Synthetic fibers are long-wearing, avoid shedding, and easy to clean. Nylon and acrylic can be woven and tufted to resemble wool, but at a much lower cost.
  • Jute/Sisal – Natural fibers that are extremely durable for high traffic and outdoor areas, but feel stiff underfoot. Jute and sisal rugs should be dry-cleaned since fibers can absorb water.
